The One Behind the Eyes

Original reflections by David G-Morgan

There is a strange familiarity about being myself. I've looked through these eyes for as long as I can remember, yet I've never actually seen the one who is looking. I've seen my reflection, watched my body change, and listened to the stories I've told about who I am. But sometimes, in a moment of complete stillness, I wonder whether all those descriptions are simply things I've gathered along the way. And if they are, what is it that has been here, noticing them?

Before the First Thought

Original reflections by David G-Morgan

Occasionally, I become aware of a moment before my thoughts have properly begun. There's no particular question, no problem to solve, nothing I need to become. Just the experience of being here. Then a thought arrives, followed by another, and almost immediately I'm back inside the familiar world of memory, identity and expectation. It makes me wonder how much of my life I experience directly, and how much I experience through the continuous conversation taking place in my mind.

The Person I Remember

Original reflections by David G-Morgan

I can remember versions of myself that no longer seem to exist. The young man who was certain about things I now question. The person who wanted what I no longer want. The one who believed certain achievements would finally bring lasting satisfaction. They were all me, yet none of them quite describes the person sitting here today. If I've changed so many times while continuing to feel like myself, perhaps identity is less permanent than I've always imagined.

The Distance Between Two People

Original reflections by David G-Morgan

Two people can sit beside one another, share the same room, hear the same words, and still inhabit remarkably different experiences. Each brings a lifetime of memories, expectations, fears and meanings into that moment. We assume we are responding to the same reality, but perhaps we are often responding to our own understanding of it. I sometimes wonder how many disagreements might soften if we could experience, even briefly, the world as the other person experiences it.

The Things We Never Said

Original reflections by David G-Morgan

There are conversations I've carried in my mind for years that never took place in the world. Words I might have spoken, questions I might have asked, things I wished someone had understood without my having to explain them. Yet the other person may have carried an entirely different conversation of their own. Perhaps some of the greatest distances between people are not created by what was said, but by what each believed the other already knew.

When Love Meets Expectation

Original reflections by David G-Morgan

I've wondered how often we encounter another person as they actually are, and how often we encounter the person we hope they will become. We can care deeply for someone while quietly asking them to fulfil a picture we've created in our minds. And when they cannot, disappointment begins to occupy the space where affection once seemed effortless. Perhaps loving someone and needing them to be a particular way are two very different experiences, even when they feel almost identical.

The Invisible Lives Around Us

Original reflections by David G-Morgan

Every person I pass carries a world I will never fully know. A history, a private conversation, a collection of losses and joys, and memories that may never be spoken aloud. For a brief moment our lives intersect, and then we continue in different directions. It makes me wonder how often I've mistaken the small part of someone I could see for the whole of who they were. And how much might change if I remembered that every person is experiencing a life as immediate and complex as my own.

The Silence Beneath the Noise

Original reflections by David G-Morgan

For much of my life, I've filled the hours with things to do, problems to solve and places to reach. Yet occasionally, when everything becomes quiet, I notice how unfamiliar silence can feel. Without the next task or distraction, I am left with the simple experience of being myself. Sometimes that feels wonderfully peaceful. Sometimes uncomfortable. I wonder whether the silence changes, or whether it simply reveals what I have been carrying into it.

The Moment That Never Returns

Original reflections by David G-Morgan

There are ordinary moments from my life that I would give almost anything to experience again. Not necessarily the important occasions, but something simple. A voice. A familiar room. An afternoon when nothing remarkable happened. At the time, I had no idea it would become a memory I would one day treasure. It makes me wonder how many moments I'm living through today without recognising that I may someday wish to return to them.

The Mystery of Another Consciousness

Original reflections by David G-Morgan

I know what it feels like to be me. I can listen to another person describe their experience, recognise their emotions and sometimes feel remarkably close to their understanding. Yet I can never directly enter their awareness. They remain a centre of experience that I can approach but never completely inhabit. Perhaps this is one of the quiet mysteries of being human: we can feel profoundly connected while remaining, in some fundamental way, unknown to one another.

The Life I Didn't Live

Original reflections by David G-Morgan

Every significant choice seems to leave another possible life behind. A different direction, a different encounter, a different version of who I might have become. Occasionally I find myself wondering about those lives that never happened. But then I realise I'm imagining them from the perspective of the person my actual choices helped create. Perhaps I can never know what I truly missed, because the person who would have experienced it would not be quite the person I am today.

When the Observer Becomes the Question

Original reflections by David G-Morgan

For years I've been interested in observing my thoughts, reactions and the way I experience the world. Yet there is a curious point at which observation seems to turn back upon itself. I notice a thought, then notice that I am noticing. I can question the thought, but I can also question the one doing the questioning. Eventually words become rather inadequate. I don't know whether there is some deeper answer waiting to be found. But the experience of asking remains extraordinary.
